Try some tickers with the popup Internet Toolbox. 7am is a leading provider of news tickers. Only their World News ticker is free. Any number of their other 20-odd topical tickers cost $50/year. The headlines are quite good, and the link will open in a new window. However, you can do little to configure the appearance of the ticker. News Index offers a Java applet ticker that displays headlines from a custom keyword news search that works, but not quite so well as one might hope. Often stories that not topical or are months old show up in the results. A pop-up will load each time a headline is clicked on (in addition to the news article window). And you cannot do anything to configure its appearance. As of this writing, News Clicker is up for sale, but their tickers continue to be available. News Clicker excels in the configurablity of their Java ticker applets. You can set the colors, as you wish, and several of their tickers are without border or logo that you are unable to change (unlike many others). Unfortunately, their headlines are not updated as often as on some other tickers, nor do they come from as many different sources. Ace Internet, a UK ISP, provides a free UK News ticker that "is UK biased, and is continually updated 24 hours a day with the latest news headlines, weather, lottery results and more." The code for your webpage is a linked javascript. India Ticker contains a wide variety of headlines about India. The disadvantage is that they are all from one source, IndiaExpress.com. But it looks good, and you can choose the background and text color, font and size. The Australian Broadcasting Company's free ABC Science news ticker offers good science stories, but this ticker usually only lists from four to seven of them, so it is limited. It can be configured to open in a new window (as can most of the tickers on this page). Firehouse offers a ticker that supplies fire, rescue, EMS, and safety headlines linked to articles at their website only. It looks good, but they ask that you not customize its appearance. They provide the code up front, and ask that you email them and tell them where you are placing it. You can also place a search entry form for their web directory on your site. Barchart provides a variety of free content, including a stock ticker, a stock index ticker, and a commodities ticker, that you can use together or separately. You can customize the tickers colors, fonts, and size, and choose what content (which stock's prices...) is displayed in them. By default, they do not open in a new window, but if you add this tag: < param name="target" value="_blank" >they will open a new window when clicked. Barchart also provides a free stock quotes java applet that looks like a newsfeed (non-moving), with customizable stocks, size, colors, and fonts, and a cobranding program that offers many pages of free financial content for your website. The Financials provides over almost 50 free javascript feeds, giving daily market closing prices and charts in general and specific categories, and you can choose any of 5 sizes for each. Although they are not exactly "tickers", they are listed here because they have an interactive component: if you click on a particular listing, the accompanying chart changes to that item. The links DO open in new windows. These financial feeds are not customizable, but they look good. The Financials offers customization and cobranding options for a fee. Sports Feed provides a very nice looking sports news AND scores ticker for free, and they have an affiliate program to boot (they pay $.10 per email newsletter sign-up, after you reach a minimum). You can change the speed, but not the appearance (it does look good). It comes packaged as a JavaScript feed, rather than as a Java applet. AllSports provides free topical sports headlines (from their website only) in both Java applet ticker and JavaScript newsfeed forms. Their tickers look good (and you can configure the appearance), and come in MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, Golf, Tennis, and NCAA football flavors. Fish Ticker offers headlines of fishing news. They appear to be unique in this respect. The ticker looks good, and you can customize many parameters. The headlines link to fishing news stories from numerous sources. No registration is required, just cut and paste. Bravenet offers a wide variety of free web tools, but they now charge a low rate of $9.99/month for their excellent news tickers and financial tickers from QuoteMedia.com. You do need to register with BraveNet, but this is well worth it for their wide variety of tools. Web Reference offers numerous RSS news feeds including finance, business, web development, international, linux, and software. "Each feed is changed daily, and Doc JavaScript's Tips are updated 365 days a year." | See also:
